A Couple Grounded in Tradition and Ready to Celebrate
Lauren and Josh (along with their families) are some of the kindest people I know, so down to earth and were incredibly thoughtful about the details they chose. From the beginning, their priorities were clear. They wanted to honor meaningful traditions during their ceremony while also hosting an elegant, joyful & high-energy celebration for their family and friends.
They envisioned a wedding that felt warm and generous in spirit, where guests felt cared for from the moment they arrived. At the same time, they wanted elegance. The aesthetic mattered. The layout mattered. The experience needed to feel elevated without losing the fun essence of the day.
One non-negotiable detail set the tone for the entire reception: dancing all night until two in the morning. When planning a large wedding in southern California, that kind of late-night energy requires a venue that allows it. Hummingbird Nest Ranch was a natural fit because of its ability to host amplified music past midnight, something that is not always possible at other Southern California venues.
Exploring the Propertyβs Event Spaces
One of the reasons Hummingbird Nest Ranch stands out among Southern California wedding venues is the variety of event spaces available across the property. Each area offers a distinct atmosphere, allowing couples to design a wedding day that feels layered and intentional while maintaining seamless flow from one experience to the next.
The venue includes several additional locations suited to different guest counts and styles. The Villa, accommodating up to 300 guests, showcases Spanish Colonial architecture with arched entryways, fountains, and mountain views that create an elegant and timeless setting. For larger-scale celebrations, the Grand Prix can host 999+ guests, offering expansive open space framed by dramatic rock formations and ideal for tented receptions or high-production events.
The Sitting Bull area (featured photos in this blog), rich in history and dating back to the 1920s, accommodates up to 300 guests and features private gardens, a cobblestone courtyard, and the signature olive grove that gives the space its romantic, Tuscan-inspired feel. The Lake Lawn provides another versatile option for up to 700 guests, set beside a sparkling lake and surrounded by greenery, while The Barn offers an indoor or hybrid setting for up to 800 guests, blending Spanish-style architecture with refined country charm.
Q Vineyard offers a completely different experience within the property, surrounded by rocky outcrops and cabernet sauvignon vines that create a secluded, wine-country atmosphere in the hills of Simi Valley. Featuring both outdoor lawn spaces and a rustic barn adorned with twinkle lights, the space blends indoor and outdoor celebrations seamlessly. With seating for approximately 250 guests, Q Vineyard is ideal for couples seeking a more intimate setting while still experiencing the scale and scenery the property is known for.
Having multiple environments within one property allows weddings at Hummingbird Nest Ranch to feel dynamic. Guests experience movement throughout the day, discovering new spaces as the celebration unfolds β one of the defining features that makes this venue so memorable.

Why Hummingbird Nest Ranch Was the Right Fit
For a 240-guest wedding, space and flow are everything. One of the greatest strengths of Hummingbird Nest Ranch is the way its event areas transition effortlessly from one to the next. Lauren & Josh chose the Sitting Bull spaces, and the Olive Grove, Cobblestone Courtyard, and Pepper Tree Lawn each served a distinct purpose while maintaining visual and experiential cohesion. That movement between three separate spaces created a rhythm to the celebration, allowing each part of the day to have its own atmosphere without feeling disconnected.
The spaciousness of the property also supported the coupleβs desire for a large band setup, multiple bar locations, and specialty experiences like a cigar bar and gelato cart, all without overwhelming the layout.
The Ceremony in the Olive Grove
The Olive Grove truly shined during Lauren and Joshβs wedding. The ceremony space felt romantic and grounded, with lush florals on the chuppah in a way that elevated the natural beauty of the setting, beautifully designed by Unique Floral Design. Nothing felt over-done, just natural in the setting.
This was one of the most meaningful parts of the day. The presence of so many loved ones created an atmosphere that felt both sacred and celebratory. Even with a large guest count, the ceremony maintained intimacy, which speaks to how thoughtfully the space can be used at Hummingbird Nest Ranch.
For couples planning a wedding here, understanding how to design within the scale of the Olive Grove is key. Florals, layout, and guest seating should enhance the natural beauty rather than compete with it.
Designing the Reception for Energy and Flow
As guests transitioned into cocktail hour, the natural flow of the venue became especially apparent. Providing ample seating during cocktail hour is essential at a property of this size, not only for comfort but for encouraging connection. Bars were positioned intentionally, signature drinks were flowing, and passed appetizers kept the experience dynamic.
The reception on the Pepper Tree Lawn was designed with energy in mind. A mix of long and round tables, provided by A Rental Connection, created movement and visual interest across the lawn. The large stage, featuring live music by Blitz Nation, was positioned to anchor the space, with bars placed strategically on either side to keep guests circulating and engaged. Ceremony florals were thoughtfully repurposed into the reception design, ensuring cohesion throughout the evening.
Because this was a summer wedding in Simi Valley with an 8:10pm sunset, timing influenced the overall structure of the day. Sunset impacts ceremony start times, cocktail hour lighting, and the pacing of dinner and speeches. When planning a Hummingbird Nest Ranch wedding in the summer months, lighting should be evaluated carefully to maintain ambiance as the evening unfolds.
A Guest Experience That Built Momentum
From welcome beverages at arrival to the final song played well into the night, the guest experience was intentionally layered. The ceremony grounded everyone in meaning. Cocktail hour allowed for connection and movement. Speeches during dinner brought heartfelt emotion back to the forefront.
Then the celebration shifted gears. The dance floor filled and stayed full. The energy never dipped. Guests moved between dancing, the cigar bar, late-night treats, including a gelato cart from Tifa Chocolate & Gelato, and passed snacks of sliders, french fries, and more near the dance floor. A fully immersive experience!
The ability to continue music until 2am transformed the reception from a standard wedding timeline into a true celebration. This is where Hummingbird Nest Ranch stands apart. The property can hold both reverence and revelry. It allows couples to honor tradition while still hosting a celebration that feels expansive and alive.
Planning Considerations for Future Couples
Working at Hummingbird Nest Ranch requires thoughtful coordination. The property has specific operational guidelines, and timelines must account for structured load-in and extended on-site hours. For weddings of this scale, planners and coordinators are often present for 15 to 20 hours depending on the schedule and expansive rental load-in.
Budgeting realistically from the beginning is essential, especially when considering rentals, labor, lighting, and layout needs. The venue also requires several vendors such as valet, security, bar, and coordination, along with hiring a preferred floral designer, caterer, and rental vendor from their list. Due to the requirements, Iβm usually budgeting around $180,000-250,000++ for weddings of 150-250 people.
Strategic layouts make all the difference here. Because the venue is so spacious, every design decision should be intentional. Lighting, guest comfort, and weather considerations must be addressed early, particularly for summer weddings in Southern California.
With the right guidance, thoughtful design, and a clear vision for guest experience, Hummingbird Nest Ranch wedding becomes more than a venue. It becomes the foundation for a celebration that feels personal, elevated, and unforgettable.
